Every job below is one we do ourselves across Phoenix.
We frame new decks from the ledger board out, sizing joists and beams to the actual span and load, not just what's easiest to build. Footings go below grade deep enough to handle Phoenix's clay and caliche soil, and we set the ledger flashing before a single deck board goes down.
Soft spots in decking, rot at the ledger, loose posts and rail wobble all get fixed, usually without tearing out the whole deck. We check the framing underneath a bad board before replacing just the board, because a rotten joist hiding under good decking is the repair that actually matters.
Phoenix sun breaks down stain and sealant faster than almost any other market in the country, so we strip, sand and recoat on a schedule that matches how the deck actually faces the sun, not a generic yearly rule. Semi-transparent stains show grain but call for recoating more often, solid stains last longer but hide the wood, and we'll tell you which one fits your deck.
We design around shade, sightlines and how you actually use the backyard, whether that's a grill station, a hot tub pad, or stairs down to the pool. Multi-level decks, built-in benches and shade structures all get worked into the plan before we order lumber.
Composite boards don't rot and don't need staining, but the darker colors get hot enough in July to burn bare feet, so material choice matters more here than in most climates. We install with hidden fastener systems where the board profile supports it, and we still leave the gapping the manufacturer specs for heat expansion.
Railings get built to code height, 36 to 42 inches depending on the deck, with baluster spacing under 4 inches so a small kid or a dog can't slip through. Wood, cable and metal rail systems are all options, and we'll tell you which one holds up best where your deck sits.
If the framing underneath is solid but the decking itself is shot, we pull the old boards and replace just the surface instead of rebuilding from the footings up. This is usually the cheaper fix when a deck is structurally fine but the boards have cupped, split or faded past saving.
Old decks come down board by board, and we check what's underneath before hauling it off, since sometimes the framing gets reused for the new build. Nails, screws and old flashing all get cleared out of the yard, not just piled at the curb.
A deck in direct Phoenix sun is unusable most of the year without something over it, so pergolas and shade structures come up on almost every design conversation. We build them to tie into the deck framing itself, not just bolted on as an afterthought.
If you're buying a house with an existing deck, or you're just not sure your current one is safe, we check the ledger attachment, footing condition, joist spacing and rail strength and give you a straight answer. Some fixes run a couple hundred dollars, some mean the deck needs to come down, and we'll tell you which before you spend money on either.
Four steps, and no surprises in any of them.
You tell us what you want doing, we look at what is actually there, and we ask the awkward questions early.
In writing, itemised, free. If something might add cost later we flag it now rather than at the end.
Same crew throughout. We cover your floors, keep the dust down and tidy up before we leave each day.
You point out anything you are not happy with and we fix it before the invoice, not after.
